Door Skins & Priming

Door Skin Basics

At Superior Doors, we offer a range of skin thicknesses to suit different price points and desired outcomes for the home owner. Thicker door skins increase strength and durability, allow for deeper, more substantial grooving, and most importantly, reduce component show-through for a higher quality paint finish.

3mm MDF Door Skins

3mm door skins represent the entry level for our standard interior doors. 3mm skins create a very strong and durable door capable of all the general wear and tear that life requires.

However, there are limits at the entry level. 3mm skins will not have the impact resistance of a thicker door skin simply because they have less material in their structure. Though, this won't affect most normal living conditions.

It's important to understand that the skin used will have a big impact on the visual finish of the door. 3mm door skins will generally allow some component show-through from the underlying door structure and should never be used with semi-gloss or gloss paint finishes. Under critical lighting, door components may become visible on the surface. 3mm door skins are not warranted against component show-through when used with semi-gloss, gloss, high-gloss, or lacquered paint finishes.

4mm MDF Door Skins

4mm door skins represent the premium level for our standard interior doors. 4mm skins create an even stronger, more durable door

4mm skins offer greater impact resistance because they have 25% more material in their structure, which gives them a service life advantage over 3mm skins, regardless of the rigours of their environment.

As pointed above, it is important to understand that the skin used will have a big impact on the visual finish of the door. 4mm door skins will allow much less show-through from the underlying door structure. Doors with 4mm skins can be used with semi-gloss paint finishes but may still exhibit some component show-through in critical light paths. While 4mm skins are warranted for component show-through with semi-gloss paints, a thicker custom skin is recommended for gloss, high-gloss, or lacquered paint finishes.

4.75, 6, & 9 mm MDF Door Skins

Our 4.75, 6, and 9mm door skins are available as custom options. The benefits are premium paint finish and increased door rigidity, allowing the door to resist twist, cup, and bow.

These enhanced qualities ensure greater stability when making very large doors or applications requiring a premium paint finish.

UV Pre-Primed Skins

The use of UV primer provides additional benefits to the home owner and the environment the doors live in. UV primer is both moisture and solvent resistant, harder, more scratch resistant, and offers greater fire resistance than normal door priming solutions. In addition to its general resistance, it is also formulated to offer optimal adhesion for all mainstream finishing coats.

UV primer is solvent, formaldehyde, and V.O.C (Volatile Organic Compounds) free. The UV coating process is energy-efficient, unlike the heat drying processes used to evaporate water based solutions. Additionally, UV primer can be disposed of without extra processing - whether through landfill, incineration, or recycling into pulp.
